'I played with Sanjaya just for fun' оправдывайся, голубь, оправдывайся
At the much-hyped American Idol finale last week, the biggest waves were created by Aerosmith's Joe Perry, who teamed up with the controversial Idol Sanjaya Malakar as he belted out You Really Got Me.Was a reality singing show the place for the legendary rocker, especially as bandmate Steven Tyler has already gone on record saying he doesn't quite approve of these contests? Guitar wiz Joe Perry discusses the issue in an exclusive midnight chat with BT.
Bangalore - I've heard a lot about it. The food, I hear, is one step hotter than vindaloo!
On playing at the AI finale: They (producers) asked me to play backup with Sanjaya and I agreed. Fans love the show. It's big, the second biggest in the US after the Superbowl in terms of the number of viewers.
I did it for fun - it was a tongue-incheek kind of thing. I also wanted to play with Kelly Clarkson (he accompanied her for sgt pepper's lonely hearts club band). She's got a fantastic voice.
On controversial Sanjaya: Sanjaya's so young. I don't think he's had time to develop as a singer. Sometimes that happens naturally - Michael Jackson was a natural at five - at other times it takes years. Sanjaya has a lot going for him - he's got rhythm and timing. It's a matter of putting in the hours. Even the Beatles spent years playing at clubs. You have to rehearse and rehearse, play and play. In his case it may be too much too soon. Now even the show's runners-up get record deals! You have to see whether or not he's got it in him to keep it going. Sanjaya's a really nice guy. He could have been all blown up with the fame he's got, but he knows his limitations. He listens - he went along with all the suggestions I gave him. I found the experience interesting. For me, it was a piece of cake. But for him - it takes a lot of guts to go in front of the judges and get all those hits in the press.
I knew i like joe
"On to American Idol! Holy shit did you guys give Joe some crap for being on that show. You would have hated the lovefest that went on backstage. I’m sure you want to know what kind of jerk Sanjaya was. I hate to tell you but he was the nicest kid you would want to meet. What he lacked in the vocal department he made up for in personality. He was in awe of Joe. He gave Joe nothing but respect. All the armchair critics can say what they want but the kid is all right in my book. I’m sure you think I’ve totally lost it. On to Kelly Clarkson. The girl can sing! I get to hear the world’s greatest singer every night but this girl has some pipes. Again, say what you want but she is definitely America’s sweetheart and is going to be around a long time. Joe’s dressing room was smack dab in the middle of Tony Bennett and Bette Midler. C’mon it doesn’t get any better than that. Joe was having a blast hanging out with the Music Industry’s elite. Smokey Robinson even stopped by for a chat. For all the grief he got, it was a lot of fun.
blah blah
See you on the Road!

While he can't hit Steven Tyler high notes, Sanjaya Malakar impressed the Aerosmith guitarist. "He's just such a great guy and so easy going. It was just a lot of fun for me." So much so that there's talk of Aerosmith mentoring contestants next season. "After talking to some of the contestants and hanging around it's such a really cool and loose thing for such a huge show," he reflected. Aerosmith is gearing up for an international tour that will include the Middle East, Russia and the Hyde Park Festival in the U.K. "We're playing in places that we haven't played in years. We're going to be over there for two months."
Ending on a lighter note, lead guitarist Joe Perry, who arrived late in Dubai in order to appear on the American Idol final, said he enjoyed playing the Kinks' You Really Got Me with the aspiring singer Sanjaya on the show.
"I knew we were probably going to play India and it would be a good thing to kind of jack him up," said Perry. "He just overwhelmed me with a great personality and I think he's got a future if he works at it. He's got the drive and there's just something about him."
