This man that stands alone is not as he seems. For in fact, he is not a man at all. But rather a boy, though his actions prove otherwise. One whom has the support of his family in times of distress; but is in a situation in which he has never found himself before. His name is Sanjaya Malakar, teen idol from the reality show American Idol. What though makes his situation different this time, compared to the rest?
Adversity
Since the arrival of Sanjaya Malakar in Hollywood week, controversy has arised over the humble 17 year old from Seattle, Washington. Constantly being berated and critized for his looks, actions, and singing performances. Week after week being torn down by the judges rude and unjust comments. The media using every oppurtunity to be critical of another facet of his past performances. Under these circumstances, many boys his age would resort to a violent rage, or simply quit. Sanjaya, however, is different in more ways then one. Not merely in the way he carries himself, but in the mature manner that he handles himself. What was his reaction to all of the critism placed upon him? He humbly accepted the advice and council given, and chose not to act out. He even went so far as to thank Simon Cowell, the creator of the show, and crudest judge of the threem for his honesty!
However, he didn't let this constant nagging get him down. Rather than backing down, and trying to conform into standards others set for him, as his last performance on idol illustrated, he "gave them something to talk about." Daring to be different, trying distinct hair styles and songs each week. From the straightned hair, to the famous "pony-hawk", he did as he felt he would enjoy. He was, as he put it, "himself", and was just trying to have fun.
Sanjaya, though, is more than just a fun-loving boy who dared to be different in an industry that thrives on being in unison. He proved something to one and all. He didn't try to be something he wasn't to make people like him. He always stayed true to himself, even through harsh adveristy. He proved that it isn't bad to be different, just as long as you are always yourself.
