That pretty much sets the stage for the rest of the story. It's told initially from Aswatthama's POV, but changes halfway through the first book to Arjun's POV.
We see him go from a young man, to a bitter exile, to a man utterly in love, to another bitter exile, to a proud father, to a fearful nephew/grandson/disciple, to one of the greatest warriors on the field of Kurukshetra, and then to a wise, enlightened man. And then, at the end, right before Bhishma's death, he dreams of consigning his ashes in the Ganga, when Mother Ganga appears to him (in the dream) and after mourning over her son, tells him that he can have a boon. Since this is after the battle, after Gandhari's curse of Krishna and the Yadavas that they will destroy themselves and Krishna will die in obscurity, Arjun tries to ask for the curse to be revoked. Of course, Ganga can't do that, but she says that she will give Arjun one boon, keeping with the boon that his friend asked for so long ago. She tells him that no matter what happens to men's hearts in Kali yuga, there will always be great love (along with friendship) between Krishna and Arjun, and whenever men (and women) think of that love and friendship, they will be moved to deeds of love and nobility.

Gupta-vati: Ah, but that raises the even more interesting question whether there's anything to all this karma business except sex. All this you have to do what (who?) you have to do business in the Bhagavad Gita - maybe it's all about Krishna helping Arjun come out of the closet? Action without expectation of fruit of action. See what I mean? :-).
Вообще народ Бхишму там обсуждал - вот уж кому досталось!
