Given Vishnu's sense of humor, he probably promised them that they'd be his Shamshaptakas in the Dwapar yuga - the army of fanatical fighters that Krishna had. And when it actually came to using them, Krishna gave them to Duryodhan, and they found themselves on the opposite side of him and Arjun.
