Well, they must be very deep. He (or his sister) haven't gone by their Indian names for many years. NO ONE at the high schools he attended even knew he was called Sanjaya. They used their Indian names for AI because it was more interesting. He or any other family members haven't been to temple. He plays no Indian instuments. Nor have there been any Indian inflections in any of the songs I have heard him sing. There are MANY articles in India severely criticizing him for being a "fake" Indian, using his ethnicity to further himself while giving nothing back.
Where is your proof for anything you have just stated? Do you actually live in Federal Way/Seattle to know any of this? What WE know, as fact, is that Sanjaya's name is listed as "Sanjaya Malakar" in his yearbook pictures. His *middle* name was changed when he was 5 to Joseph, to honor is late grandfather. Sanjaya's father is a Hindu priest, and when he visited Sanjaya in LA, they went to pray in the local Krishna temple.
I get so irritated when people comment that he is not Indian enough OR American enough. He is a blend of both cultures, and should not have to feel any ridiculous pressure to be the representative for either one. It is disingenious for you to pass any kind of judgment on him or his upbringing.
Everything you have stated is your own racist opinion and the 'facts' can easily be disputed. The more I think about it, the more I smell a troll.
That was a very interesting night, and I think it was a confluence of several things that led to Sanjaya's being voted off.
Number 1, as has been noted, AI was desperate to get Sanjaya off before the IGB extravaganza. Sanjaya was sucking up all the oxygen on the show, and no one was paying attention to anyone or anythng else. This was intolerable to Simon, as evidenced by his temper tantrum after the perfomance. I have not discounted the rumor that AI manipulated the vote to rid them of the bane of Sanjaya no matter what the vote totals were.
Number 2. I think the red bandana was a mistake. It looked goofy, and it probably offended the country fans. I know the red bandana looks cool on Willie Nelson, but on Sanjaya, it looked like he was making fun of the country fans. Given that this demographic is the LEAST tolerant of an ethnically different person, they were mightily turned off. I was really hoping he would come out with a black shirt, black jeans, black jacket, and a black cowboy hat. He would have been so sexy that the country folk would have voted for him in spite of themselves.
Number 3. This was right after Besame Mucho. Sanjaya had just proven to the world that he had a beautiful voice. Everyone was raving about his talent. The bar had been set much higher for him. People expected another perfomance on this level. Now I love Sanjaya as much or more as anyone on the planet, but in the live performance there were a few wavering notes. He was no longer expected to perform on the level of a novice 17 year old, but as an Idol Star. The critics were ruthless and showed no mercy when the notes were not as pure as they are in the MP3 version.
Number 4. A very significant event that night was the Eye Roll that Simon gave when Chris R mentioned the VA tradgedy. Emotions were very raw. Chris gave a quite mediocre perfomance in Mayberry. No way was this a winning song. But, when Simon gave the famous eye roll while Chris was speaking, Chris won a huge sympathy vote. If I was halfway partial, I would have voted for Chris as a reaction to Simon. It doesnt matter that they apologized and proved that Simon was not rolling his eyes at Chris. The only thing that mattered was those two hours of voting at the end of the show. I believe that Chris was endangered with his nasally song, but was saved by the grief stricken public who were angered by stupid Simon and his tactless facial exprеssions.
Ok im bored and im in my last class of the day so I need something to pass the time
I thought it would be nice for all us fans to list the reasons why we heart.gif Sanjaya since Mamajaya is here and im sure Sanjaya is reading bye1.gif
1. His sense of humor. From the Best Week Ever clip to the Bill Vendall clip to the new interview with The Chicago Tribune the silly 7 questions he is really funny.
2. His personality- Along the line of the sense of humor. He has such a bright and shining personality. It was great to have atleast someone this season who could outshine all the damn celebrities they had on. This season TPTB wanted to focus more time on celebrity mentors or "Idol Gives Back" that they forgot to show the contestants. Sanjaya wasn't on that and beat them at their own game.
3. His voice- He isn't a screamer. He has a really great voice and he was totally underrated(as was Phil). He didn't have to resort to beat boxing or singing nasally to get through a song. Im not being biased but out of all the guys he had the best studio voice. I love all his Mp3's.
4. He controlled this show and he didn't play by the rules. The way they set him up each week in the semi's to make it look like he was in the bottom while someone else left showed how set up this show really is. I have known this for years but this year it was so clear. They wanted to make him as the villain or the next John Stevens who totally cracked under pressure and looked like he wanted to cry each week he was on. Sanjaya wasn't on their BS. Come Top 11 night WOW. He choose a risky song, came out of his shell, danced all on stage, danced on the stage behind the judges. That preformance was one of the best things I have ever seen on Idol ever. It seemed like he was giving the finger to all the haters out there and to the judges. LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!!!!
The Ponyhawk has got to be one of the greatest things I have ever seen. wub.gif By now the media was all over him and the judges so wanted him out. I take the ponyhawk was another "F U" and it worked!! The fans and the haters ate it up. Brilliant. Oh and him backsassing Simon for the first time was great. Had me laughing my ass off. No way is he going to sit by and take their crap. While other contestants took critisism hard and couldn't handle it *coughChrisSlighcough* Sanjaya came back fighting harder.
Also after he was kicked off they couldn't go one show with out mentioning him. Especially "Idol Gives Back" (Marketing ploy show). How many times was he mentioned? Then them using "You Really Got Me" for the stupid Ford commercial during the final 4(Sanjaya's version was 100 times better then that) We all know that was Sanjaya's song happy.gif
Ratings nosedive also showed he took many viewers with him when he was eliminated thumbsup.gif I love to throw that in the haters faces.
5. Besame Mucho- Loved it so much. It was the best of the night. Also Randy said something clever for once" Sanjaya is the smartest contestant ever. Damn straight Randy! He made Jennifer Lopez giggle and blush heart.gif The only thing that pissed me off was Simons back handed comment. What an ass.
6. "Welcome To the Universe of Sanjaya"- Best line ever. That needs to be the headline for the tour.
7. How well spoken he is in all the interviews. Total class act. Jillian you raised such a great son. I know you are so proud. A certain contestant who is 10 years older then Sanjaya and threatened to quit after being slammed by the judges could learn a thing or two from Sanjaya.
8. Now for the shallow reason...... He is very good looking heart.gif Hopefully he gets plenty of modeling offers. heart.gif Would make a lot of people happy!! laughing.gif
I have to say, I was pretty damned impressed with what he did on British Invasion Night. Before that round, I kind of had a rather matronly sympathy toward that poor little boy who was taking such a pounding and looking so sad, but that night...
You gotta understand what I think of when I think of the British Invasion. It was a time of civil unrest, of rebellion, a time when disenfranchised youth began to protest the destructive constraints of the people around them, a time when a rebellious new breed wore their hair long in defiance and sang openly about sex ... and a time when fangirls screamed so loudly and cried so fervently in the presence of their rock gods that they could barely hear the music.
On British Invasion night, we had Lakisha strutting around in diamonds. Blake did some nifty arrangements and a few cool dance steps, all the while dressed like a guy on a golf course. Melinda, as much as I love her, actually really annoyed me; "As Long As He Needs Me" is a song from a Broadway musical. At best, it's a song a woman sings for the abusive criminal who will eventually kill her, and Melinda treated it like a straight love song. At worst, it was a cop-out, and almost a complete repudiation of the theme. Jordin had a really lovely vocal.
And in to all this comes Sanjaya. He's on the ropes, he's been told for four straight weeks that he's in the bottom two (and probably lied to about that every single time.) Everybody just assumes that he's the next one out, and the other contestants are probably all sitting around high-fiving each other for making the tour... because EVERYBODY knows that Sanjaya is the one who will not make that final cut. He's too timid, he can't sing loudly enough, his stage movement is awkward, his spirit is almost entirely broken...
And Peter Noone did something. I don't know what, or how, but that man lit a fire under our little Papaya and coaxed him into taking some drastic risks. Forget decorum. Forget sounding pretty. Forget being terrified of his own shadow. He was a British (India) Invasion, and he'd just taken over. He traded in his soft, smooth tone for a gravelly growl that could actually be heard above the orchestra, he ran around that stage like he owned the place, he flirted with Paula, he flirted with the camera, and all of a sudden I believed this kid had some genuine passion and - as this is what the song is about - he, the boy wonder everybody accused of being either gay or asexual, exhibited some very apparent and voracious sex drive. It was like watching a whole different person. That was the night he went from meek little whipping boy to counter-culture hero.
In a night where my favorite contestant was showing that she did not know what the play Oliver! was about, did not know what the British Invasion was about, Sanjaya WAS the British Invasion. He was rebellion, he was protesting the constraints and abuse of those around him, he wore his hair free, sang about sex... and oh, look, there's the crying fan. Serendipity. Obviously, this simply had to happen.
That was the first night I voted for anybody this year. I did cast votes for folks besides Sanjaya that night. I felt like, if I was going to support my guilty pleasure, I was somehow morally bound to vote for "the good people" too, so Melinda and Blake and Jordin got a little love from my telephone - but mostly, it was about saving Sanjaya, putting him on the tour, rewarding him for this remarkable change in outlook and performance strategy. It was about applauding a guy who put out a gut performance when he absolutely, positively had to have it.
The next day, Ryan turned to a boy who had been made to feel crushingly guilty for advancing FOUR STRAIGHT WEEKS - and that's not even counting the whole heartache of being in a room of celebrating winners, weeping for his sister who had failed to make the cut. He turned to a boy who had been uncomfortable with his own success the entire time, and said, "Sanjaya, you are safe." No cliffhanger. And Sanjaya gave a jaunty little grin and sat, even as many people around him (especially the ones like Haley who were probably counting on him to be their human shield) reacted in shock.
He knew he deserved to stay, and I did, too. That's the week I really became a Fanjaya.
